"The Fugitive" caboose and cottage, walk to town
Bryson City, NC, United States
The actual caboose from the movie "The Fugitive" and a historic mountain cottage share one private yard, less than a 10-minute walk from downtown Bryson City. Two completely different spaces: the caboose is bunk beds and railroad history; the cottage is king beds, a full kitchen, and hand-hewn log walls. Together they give your group room to spread out, be together, or both. The fire pit is the evening gathering spot. The Great Smoky Mountain Railway is a short walk from the door.
Good to know
The two buildings share a fire pit, two private decks, a hammock, and parking. Out front there's an open yard around the fire pit. Behind the cottage there's a more secluded backyard. Cottage: The cottage was built during Bryson City's early days with hand-hewn log walls, stone floors, and rustic log-frame furniture throughout, updated with modern comforts. Two king bedrooms with handmade beds (one made from sassafras wood), a separate living room with TV, a full kitchen with stove, oven, fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, and a full bathroom with an oversized tub and shower. There's a dedicated workspace if you need to check in with work. Caboose: P&WV #839 is the actual train car from the Harrison Ford film. Original hardwood floors and authentic railroad details throughout. Four twin bunks (two lower, two upper by ladder), a full bathroom with shower, and a kitchenette with mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. The upper bunks have personal windows that look out toward the mountains. The private deck faces the same direction. Both buildings are climate controlled year round. The layout works well for any group that wants separate sleeping spaces. The cottage handles kitchen, living room, and adult sleeping. The caboose works for whatever part of the group wants its own space, whether that's kids and teens, a couple, or any mix that benefits from a separate entrance and bathroom. Nearby Attractions: - Downtown shops and restaurants: 5-minute walk - Breweries: 5 to 10-minute walk - Great Smoky Mountain Railway and Polar Express depot: 10-minute walk - Grocery: 8-minute walk - Deep Creek Trailhead: 9 minutes - Great Smoky Mountains National Park: 10 minutes to trailhead parking - Downtown Cherokee: 17 minutes - Harrah's Cherokee Casino: 17 minutes - Nantahala Outdoor Center: 17 minutes - Mingo Falls: 29 minutes Most groups park on arrival and leave the car until they head for the trails. On a clear evening, you can hear the train whistle from the deck.
Other Details to Note
Separate Buildings: The cottage and caboose sit side by side in a shared yard. Each has its own entrance, lock, and bathroom. They are not connected inside, so guests walk outside to move between the two. Upper Bunks: The two upper bunks in the caboose are reached by a ladder with metal rungs. They may not be the right fit for young children, guests with mobility concerns, or anyone uncomfortable with heights. The lower bunks are directly accessible without a ladder. Caboose Kitchenette: The caboose kitchenette has a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. There is no stove, oven, kitchen sink, or cooking utensils. Bring plates, cups, and utensils for any food you plan to prepare there, or plan on walking to town. Cottage Steps: There are a few interior steps between rooms and down to the backyard, with no handrail. Worth knowing if stairs or mobility are a concern. Caboose Character: The caboose is a genuine historic train car, not a replica or themed room. The original hardwood flooring shows its age and the space is compact. If your group appreciates real history and rustic character, it is a good fit. Parking and Winter Roads: Free parking on site. AWD or 4WD is recommended whenever snow or ice is in the forecast, as the mountain roads can get slick. Internet: Wifi is available in both buildings. Signal can vary by room and a backup hotspot is recommended if you plan to work remotely. Nearby Construction: The local library down the road is being renovated. You may notice some daytime construction during standard business hours. Polar Express Season: The railway departure point is a 10-minute walk from the property. The trains run November through December, and it is an easy walk to the platform.

Accessibility and Availability
Neighborhood
Bryson City is a town of about 1,500 people with more stop signs than stoplights. The Tuckasegee River runs right through downtown, and most of what you'll want is within a few blocks: two breweries (one with a rooftop deck and mountain views), a chocolate shop, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, a small aquarium, a fly fishing museum, and a street art mural trail you can walk in an afternoon. The Great Smoky Mountain Railway departs from the downtown depot, and during Polar Express season families walk to the train and come back year after year. National park trailhead parking is about a 10-minute drive. It's the kind of place where you park once and don't think about the car until you head for the trails.

The car comes back out for Deep Creek, Cherokee, the national park, and the Nantahala area. AWD or 4WD is recommended whenever snow or ice is in the forecast, as the mountain roads in the Smokies can get slick. Rideshare is available in the area, though coverage is not always reliable.
