The Fugitive movie caboose, walk to downtown

This is the actual caboose from the Harrison Ford train wreck in The Fugitive. P&WV #839 rode the rails, starred in a blockbuster, and now you can sleep in it. Downtown Bryson City is less than a 10-minute walk: restaurants, breweries, and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Four twin bunks, a full bathroom, a kitchenette, and a private deck. Park when you arrive and walk to everything. During the holidays you're steps from the Polar Express. On a lucky night, you'll hear rain on the metal roof.

Good to know

Mornings here start on the deck with coffee and the town waking up below you, the mountains rising behind it. Inside, the caboose keeps its original hardwood floors and railroad details. It's a real piece of history, compact and full of character, not a polished hotel room. There are four twin bunks, two lower and two upper reached by ladder. The two upper bunks have windows that look out over the town and the mountains. The twin mattresses are comfortable. The bathroom is full size and roomy, with space to store gear and get ready. The kitchenette has a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. There's a TV, and the caboose is climate controlled year round, so it stays cozy on cold mountain nights. Outside, the private deck has seating, and there's a shared fire pit and a hammock. Nearby: - Downtown shops, restaurants, and breweries: about a 5-minute walk - Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and Polar Express depot: about a 10-minute walk - Great Smoky Mountains National Park: 3.3 miles - Harrah's Cherokee Casino: 13 miles - Nantahala Outdoor Center: 13.3 miles In the evening there's the fire pit, fireflies in the yard on the right night, and the sound of the train pulling into the depot down the hill.

Other Details to Note

Kitchenette: No plates, cups, utensils, or cookware are provided. Bring what you need for any food you plan to eat here, pick it up at the local stores, or plan on takeout. Bunks and access: The two upper bunks are reached by a ladder with metal rungs and sit up high, so they may not suit young children or anyone uncomfortable with heights. There are also a few steps up to the deck and into the caboose. What to expect: This is a real train car built in the early 1940s. It's compact, the original wood shows its age, and like any older space in the mountains, an occasional bug may find its way in. If you appreciate real history and rustic character over polish, you'll love it. Internet: WiFi is provided through Starlink. Cell signal in the mountains can be inconsistent, so the WiFi is your most reliable connection. Parking: The driveway is gravel and can be slick after heavy rain. Nearby construction: The local library down the road is being renovated, so you may notice some daytime construction during standard business hours. Other building on the property: A separate cottage shares the property. You have your own deck, parking, and entrance. The fire pit and picnic table in the front yard are shared. The spaces are otherwise separate, but guests may see each other outdoors.

Accessibility and Availability

Neighborhood

Bryson City is a town of about 1,500 people with more stop signs than stoplights. The Tuckasegee River runs right through downtown, and most of what you'll want is within a few blocks: breweries, a chocolate shop, an ice cream parlor, a small aquarium, a fly fishing museum, and a street art mural trail you can walk in an afternoon. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad departs from the downtown depot. It's the kind of place where you park the car and don't think about it again until you head out to the trails.

Downtown is all walkable, so the car stays parked for most of the trip. It comes back out for the national park, Deep Creek, the Nantahala area, and Cherokee. Parking is on site. AWD or 4WD is recommended whenever snow or ice is in the forecast, as the mountain roads in the Smokies can get slick. Rideshare is available but limited, so plan on having your own vehicle if you want to explore beyond downtown.
