The Creaking Cabin: 10 min to Cherokee Casino
Whittier, NC, United States
It looks like a cabin, but sounds like a haunted house! The Creaking Cabin earned its name honestly: as temperatures shift, the logs pop, settle, and occasionally sound like someone walking overhead. Cathedral ceiling, gas fireplace, king bedroom downstairs, king and queen in an open loft above. Full kitchen, washer and dryer, 2 baths. Ten minutes to Harrah's Cherokee Casino and downtown Bryson City, twenty to the Smokies. Front porch with rocking chairs and a hammock guests don't want to leave.
Good to know
The Creaking Cabin sits 10 minutes from Cherokee in one direction and 10 minutes from Bryson City in the other. Most log cabins in this area make you choose. This one doesn't. Downstairs there's a private king bedroom with a door that closes, a TV in the room, a full bathroom with shower, a full kitchen (stove, oven, fridge, coffee maker), a washer and dryer, and a living area with a gas fireplace and a TV. The kitchen is stocked for real cooking, not just reheating. Upstairs is an open loft with a king bed and a queen bed, plus its own bathroom with a bathtub. The cathedral ceiling makes the loft feel bigger than the square footage suggests. The front porch is the most-used part of the property. Rocking chairs, wind chimes, a hammock, and a quiet, wooded setting. Mornings are coffee and birdsong; evenings tend to end out there. Nearby Attractions: - Harrah's Cherokee Casino: 10 min - Downtown Cherokee: 11 min - Downtown Bryson City: 10 min - Sequoyah National Golf Club: 7 min - Great Smoky Mountains National Park: 20 min - Oconaluftee Indian Village & Museum of the Cherokee People: 13 min - Mingo Falls: 25 min - Downtown Sylva: 17 min Often the parents get the ground floor bedroom and the kids love the loft as their own area. The cabin works well as a Polar Express base in winter.
Other Details to Note
- Light sleepers: the wood walls can creak at night. If this might bother you, please pack some earplugs. - Upstairs bathroom is a tub only, no shower. - Downstairs bathroom has a tub with a shower; the step in is high and might not be a good fit for anyone with mobility issues. It is a regular tub, not a jacuzzi tub. - The loft is open to the living room below, great kid space but not a great fit for those seeking privacy. - No dishwasher. - The driveway is gravel. GPS sometimes routes guests to the wrong driveway, so use the directions we send before check-in. - A tiny house sits past the cabin on the same driveway. - The ice maker in the fridge doesn't work.

Neighborhood
The cabin is in Whittier, tucked between Cherokee and Bryson City. You're 10 minutes from the casino and 10 minutes from downtown Bryson City in opposite directions, which means you're never far from whatever you're in the mood for. Cherokee has the cultural sites, the elk, and Harrah's. Bryson City has the restaurants, the breweries, and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Sylva is about 17 minutes east with its own downtown strip. The national park entrance at Oconaluftee is about 20 minutes. During Polar Express season, families book the cabin and ride the train in Bryson City, then come back and do it again the next year. Elk viewing at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center is worth the drive, especially early morning or late afternoon.

Whittier, NC, United States
The cabin is centrally located, which makes it easy to bounce between Cherokee, Bryson City, Sylva, and the national park entrances. The driveway is gravel and mostly flat, with room for several cars; any 2WD vehicle is fine. Trailers are fine, as long as you are comfortable with backing them out of the driveway. 4WD or AWD is recommended whenever snow or ice is in the forecast, since the mountain roads can get slick. Rideshare is available in the area, though coverage isn't always reliable.
